This paper examines the major factors leading to the recent revival of interest in agriculture in many Asian countries, Malaysia included, after a lull of almost two decades. It then underscores the increasing relevance and impact of the development and management of agri-food supply chains and international networks at the global, regional and Malaysian levels as well as the advancements and applications of agribiotechnology. It also notes that as urbanization occurs at unprecedented rates, economic growth generated by agriculture (and the value-adding along the supply chain) is the main vehicle for reducing poverty and preserving the environment in the rural areas.
