Is AFTA part of this new regionalism? The paper will answer this by first considering both the causes and content of this new regionalism. Then it will discuss how AFTA fits or not fit with the contents of this new regionalism. AFTA and the Competitiveness of Malaysian Manufacturing

Market liberalization under AFTA is intended to rationalize regional production in ASEAN by forcing inefficient firms in member countries to exit while efficient ones garner economies of scale by producing for the ASEAN market instead of just their home market.  Are Malaysian manufacturers equipped to face the increase in competitive pressures with the market liberalization measures under AFTA? Another Winner in Malaysia’s Elections: Open Markets?

During the drawn-out FTA talks with Malaysia, US trade officials often remarked in private at the absence of domestic support for open markets and economic reform. With the March 8 elections, it appears that such support may have materialised. This could bode well for Malaysia’s FTA talks with its trading partners, including the US.
