Lynas has announced that its advanced materials plant will be ready for operation next month despite having their submissions rejected thrice by the permanent waste management and the plant decommissioning plans.
At the same time, the government continues to ignore the rakyat’s pleas to cancel this toxic plant and thus prompting various legal teams to explore the possible avenues through which to scupper the Lynas project.
Stop Lynas Coalition (SLC) has decided to go for action based on procedural ground which can be lodged immediately provided there are adequate funds to put together the case.
The first thing SLC intends to do is seek a court injunction.
SLC will name 10 defendants:
- Lynas
- Ministry of International Trade and Industry
- Ministry of Science, Technology & Innovation
- Pahang Menteri Besar
- Kuantan Municipal Council
- Pahang State Land and Mineral Office
- Malaysian Nuclear Agency
- Atomic Energy Licensing Board
- Department of Environment
- Pahang State Development Corporation
With so many defendants, initiating this legal strategy will be expensive.
To raise the RM300,000 necessary, SLC is holding a fundraising dinner in January.
Makan Malam Perdana ‘Dana Alam Sekitar’
Price: RM2,000 per table / RM200 per person
Date: 7 January 2012 (Sat)
Time: 8.00 - 11.30pm
Venue: Grand ballroom, Shah Alam Convention Centre (SACC)
According to SLC chairman Andansura Rabu, all proceedings from the dinner will be held in trust by Pakatan Rakyat to ensure accountability and transparency. Zulkefly Mohamad Omar who spent more than five years fighting against the Broga incinerator and winning in court is currently the chairman of the PAS Environmental Bureau.
SLC also said Pakatan will embark on road trips throughout the country to raise awareness on this issue. Read ‘Selangor Sokong Kempen Anti-Lynas’ in Selangorkini online.
