‘Interlok’: Scant understanding dangerous to schoolchildren

‘Interlok’, whatever that means, will go down as one of the most controversial books ever published in Malaysia. The question is do we need such a controversial book to be dished out to Form 5 students especially at this time when the question of race and religion seem to be so sensitive.

A free press must also be responsible; and a responsible press must always uphold the truth -- even if it hurts. This case is not just an NUJ problem. It is a problem that all unions should draw parallels with.

Barisan Nasional has apparently decided that the time has come to remove or cut subsidies — the kind of subsidies that poor people depend on, not the kind enjoyed by big corporations and monopolistic suppliers of utilities and infrastructural support.

In the first place, consideration must be given to what is meant by a ‘special position’ because unless this is made clear we will be talking in abstract terms losing sight of the validity of real meanings.

The deputy Utusan editor-in-chief Zaini Hassan had recently written that May 13 should be celebrated as ‘tarikh keramat’ -- an auspicious and sacred day.
