A major reason for the grinding poverty levels in Sabah and Sarawak is that first Malaysian Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman created the political term ‘Bumiputera’ to include, by the backdoor, the Malay in the same category as the Orang Asal.

Malaysia is a bad idea by the British and life in Sabah was better before the creation of the enlarged federation, writes Joe Fernandez elaborating on the view that Sept 16 is not national day but Occupation Day. What is the real size of Bumiputera equity ownership? The government has not made its estimate based on current market prices as well as excluded GLCs in its calculations but despite the questionable figures, Najib Razak is pursuing a race-based economic policy predicated on the argument that the Bumiputera share of the pie is still too small.
