NUCC members must ensure that their work does not suffer the same fate as other consultative bodies and that they are not made use of as tools, or fools, by a cynical and authoritarian regime, bent on ensuring the continuation of its power.

‘Blood and soil’ nationalism refers to an ethnic ideology based on descent and homeland, and Umno’s nationalistic signature song is one of Malay patriots yearning for a country free of pendatang. Without personal internal reformation, Malaysians will remain mistrustful of each other and divided by ethnic origin.

Plagiarism: Much more than storm in Tee cup

The issue of Ridhuan Tee’s alleged plagiarism was raised three years ago and caused a ripple back then but elicited no response from the Dean and Vice Chancellor of his university. The nonchalance and disinterest shown by the varsity authorities and the Higher Education Ministry signal that not only is academic wrongdoing tacitly condoned but the purported perpetrator can yet be given an express promotion as long as he waves the Islamic banner.

Prisoner of conscience Uthaya paying dearly for defying the government

letterImmediate action is needed to ensure that P. Uthayakumar, who in the view of CPI clearly qualifies as a political prisoner of conscience, is treated with the decency, humanity and respect that he deserves, and for the vindictive and abusive treatment meted out to him to be stopped.
