Now that Najib Razak is set to become Prime Minister, we can look to a Cabinet reshuffle and irregardless of whether Hishamuddin Hussein remains Education Minister, the decision on Math and Science in English (PPSMI) should be announced soon. Dr Mahathir Mohamad will likely descend on Najib with the gale force of three Furies combined should his pet project, the PPSMI be overturned. The vindictiveness Dr M showed inexorably against Dollah Badawi for rejecting his Crooked Bridge and other legacy should be a salutary lesson.

Last weekend, Utar held its convocation for 1,313 graduands. Of the graduating cohort, 99.9 percent were non-Malay. Aside from a sprinkling of Indians, the university enrolment is overwhelmingly Chinese even though there is no bar on Malay entry.

Utar’s mono-racial counterpart is UiTM which on the other hand does close its door to the other races. A Mara entity, UiTM is presently home to almost 120,000 predominantly Malay students.

Aimst University – the brainchild of Samy Vellu – is a private institution established by MIED the education arm of MIC, whose marquee courses include medicine, pharmacy and dentistry.

We have completed one cycle of PPSMI. In 2008, the pioneer batch that was taught Math and Science entirely in English finished their Year Six.

Yet last year, only 31.1% of Year Six pupils elected to answer the UPSR Science paper fully in English, while 68.9% opted to use Malay, or vernacular (Chinese/Tamil) or a combination of three languages (English-Malay-vernacular). Good grief! We’ve formally brought the Malaysian rojak culture into the classroom.

In response to Umno Youth mobbing Karpal Singh in Parliament, Umno information head Muhammad Muhammad Taib said the DAP chairman displayed the behaviour of “an old man who refused to understand Malay culture and customs???.
