Consolidated post on current inter-faith issues

CPI collates from various Media sources reports and commentaries on some current Inter-faith issues. It is important that Malaysians, while urged by the Government to follow the Rukunegara’s first precept of “Belief in God”, the citizenry comprising different faiths and ethnic origins and religious traditions, are truly empowered to practice in word and deed their beliefs in a parliamentary democratic system headed by a Monarch that has been adopted by Malaysia on gaining Independence some 52 years ago. It’s also CPI’s wishes that readers to our site are encouraged to discuss inter-faith issues in a rational manner with an open mind with mutual respect for other points of view. — YL Chong, Editor, CPI

In Singapore, a More Progressive Islamic Education

Pix Source: New York Times

April 23, 2009

Pix Source: New York TimesSINGAPORE — After starting the day with prayers and songs in honor of the Prophet Muhammad’s birthday, the students at the Madrasa Al Irsyad Al Islamiah here in Singapore turned to the secular. An all-girls chemistry class grappled with compounds and acids while other students focused on English, math and other subjects from the national curriculum.

Teachers exhorted their students to ask questions. Some, true to the school’s embrace of new technology, gauged their students’ comprehension with individual polling devices.

10 dalil kenapa Tun Mahathir wajib diletakkan di Seri Penanti

Dalil 1

Penyakit remuk semangat Barisan Nasional mesti segera diubati. Nampaknya nakhoda Umno – kapal perang BN yang digentari – perlu lekas menghadap Tun Doktor Tok Pawang. “Jangan mengaku kalah!??? herdik Ayahanda Mahathir tatkala mengulas kekosongan kerusi DUN Penanti, sambil menabur barus … maka asap kemenyan dan setanggi ladan pun berkepul-kepul naiklah ianya.

Mengapa pembangkang menang mudah empat pilihanraya kecil satu persatu? Ikutlah nasihat orang tua-tua: Kalau sesat, pulang ke pangkal jalan. Patuhilah kata-kata sakti khalifah Umno Baru, ahli nombor Sifar-Sifar-Satu yang digeruni.

Stop pushing for the crooked bridge

Commentary by Koon Yew Yin

21st April, 2009

Ever since Tun Dr. Mahathir rejoined UMNO, he has been interfering in the new government under Prime Minister Najib Razak. Once again in the media and now, in his own blog site, he is pushing hard for building the crooked bridge.  This time though, Dr. Mahathir is playing his last trump card by appealing to our Malaysian sense of patriotism and nationalism and by trying to whip up anti-Singaporean sentiments.  This is clear from his first sentence on the subject as well as his last sentence as found in his blog posting on 20 April 2009 on “The Crooked Bridge???.  His first sentence notes that “The Star reported that Chinese businessmen in Johor Baru want the Crooked Bridge to be built??? and his last sentence asks: “Does the Government need to ask Singapore for permission to build the now desirable crooked bridge? Is Malaysia free to do things in its own territory? Are we really independent? I wonder.???

Opinion :UN Second Conference on Racism: Has Malaysia Joined the Western Boycott?

The decision by the US and several other Western countries to boycott the UN Durban Review conference on racism and discrimination is a wrong and bad move.  Boycotts have long been proven to be counter-productive strategies whatever the targeted issues and the motives or rationalization behind them, and they should be a last rather than a first choice option.  In this particular case, the fear that the meeting may become another high profile forum for attacking Israel is clearly over-rated as well as not justified.  There are – and will continue to be – other high level meetings and forum that will focus on condemnation of Israel’s policy towards the Palestinians and its gross violation of human rights.  Until Israel reverses its policy of aggression and domination against Palestine and Israeli Arabs, it will draw scrutiny and condemnation from the rest of the world – whether within or outside UN meetings.

The party and its slogan ‘PAS for all’: a critical assessment

(Translated from Malay by CPI)

PAS (Parti Islam SeMalaysia) which previously did not receive the support of a large part of the non-Muslim community in Malaysia is now getting a rather positive response from them. This can be gathered from the result of the Bukit Gantang by-election in Perak where PAS candidate Nizar Jamaluddin snagged 75% of the Chinese votes compared to 65% [won by the party’s candidate Roslan Shaharum] in the General Election of March 2008.
